living with yoga

Hamsa Yoga Living draws upon the ancient tradition of yoga, as well as the experience of beauty in art and nature, as a means of living in greater harmony with ourselves, our environment, and our community.

We specialize in teacher education programs, workshops, and retreats that provide interested practitioners with an opportunity to enrich their experience and understanding of yoga and meditation, often using art and the natural environment as additional tools for self-reflection and cultivation. Hamsa Yoga Living welcomes all students, teachers, and studios to partner with us to offer their wisdom and learn from one another, as we together deepen our practice of living with yoga.

the swan

The swan (Sanskrit hamsa) is full of meaning in the literature and art of the ancient yoga tradition. While the hamsa is a traditional symbol of beauty in nature, it is also used to represent the rhythm and harmony of the breath, whose natural sound of exhalation and inhalation is “sa-ham.” It is through breath awareness that we can re-establish our natural equilibrium, and awaken an inner sense of peace and joy.

The swan is also a symbol of sacred wisdom or discrimination, as according to legend it is able to separate milk from water when the two are mixed, and to keep its beautiful feathers white even when living in impure conditions.

For all of these reasons, hamsa is often associated with the purity and immortality of our inner soul or spirit, and so symbolizes the cultivation of awareness of the highest nature, the Supreme Spirit (paramahamsa).
